Gauge NYC, Handcrafted Unique Metal Objects
Brand’s Overview / Information :
Founded by Paul Smotrys, a self-taught artist, Gauge NYC located in Brooklyn, NY has been handcrafting unique objects in metal for many years.
Paul Smotrys started showing his metal sculptures in Philadelphia in his early twenties. They were primarily galleries that exhibited fine art, but Paul never thought of himself as just a fine artist.
Paul believed that when something is made beautifully and with heart, there really is no distinction between high art sculpture or a home accessories. He says, “I’ve always been fascinated by the opposing properties of metal. For example, hard/soft, sharp/smooth, immediate/laborious.”
His inspiration is that place in between art and industry. The beauty and integrity of metal is the underlying bond within the collection. The results are designs that are straight forward, clean and visually compelling.
Some of his objects include decorative letters and words in many styles. Personal cake toppers, simple jewelry in 14k gold and sterling silver. Copper vases reminiscent of vintage pipe fittings, modern interpretations of oval shaker boxes, and the most stunning collections of one-of-a-kind snowflake sculptures. He has done various installations of snowflakes all over New York, from boutique stores to museums. Last Christmas, the snowflakes sparkled in the lobby of American Folk Art museum.
His products are sold at exclusive stores and museum shops including The Knot, Fred Siegel, The Museum of Art and Design in New York, Kate’s Paperie and the Princeton University Art Museum.
Paul lives in the Financial District in New York City with his wife, the painter Mie Yim and their son Otto.
