Nadia Belalia Design, Downtown Manhattan based Lamp Designer and Sculptor

Brand’s Overview / Information :

Founded by Nadia Belalia, Downtown Manhattan based sculptor and lamp designer, Nadia Belalia Design is located in the Brooklyn Navy Yards.

Nadia Belalia itself is a self-taught artist. She was born and raised in the south of France and moved to the US in 1989. She discovered metal as a material while studying welding at Pratt University. For years, Nadia has explored the art of recycling as a means to erase the boundaries between the industrial and natural worlds.

Inspired by the rawness of industrial material used in our urban lives, she has developed different lines of lamps in which everyday objects such as scrubbers and colanders are transformed into cocoons, nests, and chrysalis.

Nadia’s work includes floor, ceiling, wall, and table lamps. Her designs, by emphasizing shadows as much as light, create a warm and unique atmosphere and have attracted the eye of several NYC restaurant decorators over the years. One design line, which was part of the original décor of Le Singe Vert in Chelsea, was also featured in Interior Design Magazine (1996). Another line, which was spotted by Design Sponge (2008), has been a noted feature of various cafés and restaurants such as former Le Gamin, now known as Café Henri (New York Magazine, 2002, Village Voice 2009), in the West Village, as well as The Sardine Can in Williamsburg and just recently, Le Paddock in Brooklyn.

In 2005, Nadia was commissioned by Sony to design an original piece, a Menorah, which is displayed in Sony’s main atrium during the holidays. In 2006 she was commissioned by Les 7 Doigts de la Main, a circus company based in Montreal, to design a series of thirty lamps for their production offices.

Her work has been shown at Felissimo, a gallery and design house in midtown Manhattan (2001), and at Poltrona Frau in Soho (2005), among other places.
